The coldest morning is a bad time to discover that your new geyser cannot keep up with one shower, or that the installer needs to change your wiring before it can be switched on.
If you are deciding between a gas and electric geyser in Pakistan, start with your home's gas pressure, electrical circuit, water pressure and daily hot water use. The price on the product page is only one part of the decision. The better choice is the one you can install safely and use reliably when your household needs it.
First, compare like with like
Gas and electric describe the energy source. Instant and storage describe how water is heated and delivered. A gas geyser can be instant or storage. An electric geyser can also be instant, semi-instant or storage. Comparing an instant gas unit with a large electric tank and attributing every difference to the fuel gives you the wrong answer.
An instant heater warms water as it flows. It avoids keeping a full tank hot, but the water flow and temperature rise depend on the unit's rated output and the incoming water temperature. A storage heater heats a tank in advance and can supply several short uses from that reserve, but it needs time and energy to reheat. The US Department of Energy's water heater information distinguishes storage and instantaneous designs.
When comparing product labels, check the unit. A 40 L storage tank tells you how much water the tank holds. A 6 L instant gas rating may refer to the model's rated hot water flow, not a six-litre tank. Ask for the manufacturer's flow specification and the temperature rise at which it was measured, especially if two bathrooms may use hot water together.
Gas vs electric geyser: the practical differences
| Question | Gas geyser | Electric geyser |
|---|---|---|
| What must your home have? | Suitable gas supply, safe location and correctly designed flue or ventilation for the model | Suitable dedicated electrical supply, protection and earthing for the model |
| What happens during a supply interruption? | Heating stops if gas is unavailable; some models also need electricity or batteries for ignition and controls | Heating stops during a power cut unless a suitable backup system can support its load |
| How does hot water arrive? | Depends on whether the chosen unit is instant or storage and on its flow rating | Depends on whether the chosen unit is instant, semi-instant or storage and on its power and tank rating |
| What can raise the installed cost? | Gas piping, venting, placement and plumbing changes | Circuit, cable, breaker, earthing and plumbing changes |
Neither column is a promise about every model. Check the exact listing and installation manual before ordering. An electrician or gas installer can tell you what your home needs; a product photo cannot.
Which one costs less to run in Pakistan?
There is no reliable nationwide answer based on fuel alone. Your bill depends on the current tariff and slab, how much hot water you use, heater efficiency, heat lost from pipes or a storage tank, and whether other household use moves you into a different billing tier. Gas pressure and electrical supply also affect how useful a theoretically cheaper heater will be.
For a fair comparison, estimate the same amount of hot water at the same temperature for each option. Ask the seller or installer for the model's gas consumption or electrical input and expected efficiency. Apply the rates and billing conditions on your own recent bills, then add any installation work and maintenance. NEPRA publishes electricity tariff information, while your gas bill and provider's current tariff give you the relevant gas charges. Do not compare a monthly installment with a utility bill: the first is the purchase cost spread over time, the second is the cost of running the appliance.
An instant model may avoid storage standby losses, but that does not automatically make it the cheapest total option. If your family takes several showers close together, a correctly sized storage unit may suit your routine better. If hot water is used briefly and occasionally, paying to keep a large tank hot may make less sense.
When an instant gas geyser makes sense
An instant gas geyser can be a good fit if you have a dependable gas connection, a safe approved installation location and enough water flow for its ignition system. It is attractive when you want hot water on demand without storing a tankful. Our NasGas DG-06L instant gas listing and DG-08L listing illustrate two sizes to compare. Check each live page for current specifications and availability.
Do not select a model solely because it says "low pressure start." Ask whether it will ignite at your tap's actual flow and pressure, particularly on an upper floor or when another tap is open. Also ask whether its rated output can serve the number of outlets you plan to use at once. A larger number on the box may be useful, but only if the gas supply and installation support it.
When an electric geyser makes sense
Electric can be practical where gas supply is unreliable or there is no suitable gas connection and you have an electrical circuit that can safely support the heater. A storage model can heat water ahead of a predictable morning routine. A compact semi-instant model may suit a different pattern of use, but do not assume the word "instant" guarantees a full hot shower at every flow rate.
For a concrete comparison, our NasGas NEG-404 Plus 40 L electric storage geyser has a stated 40-litre tank and selectable heating settings. Our NasGas SEM-150 semi-instant electric model is a different design. Check the live specifications, especially tank capacity, power draw and installation requirements, before comparing either with a gas unit.
A power cut still matters. A typical small home backup system may not support a water heater's load. Have a qualified electrician assess the circuit, earthing and protective devices rather than connecting a high-load appliance to a convenient socket.
Is an electric and gas geyser worth considering?
A dual-fuel geyser may offer a way to heat water when one fuel is unavailable, but it adds installation questions for both systems. Confirm exactly how the specific model switches modes, whether it can use both simultaneously, what electrical supply it requires and how its gas exhaust is handled. Do not assume all dual-fuel units work alike.
We list NasGas electric and gas geyser models alongside single-fuel options. If a dual-fuel model seems appealing, compare its complete installed cost with a simpler unit that meets your normal needs. A backup feature is useful only if both connections are properly installed and available when you need them.
Safety comes before convenience
Gas combustion needs a suitable air supply and a safe route for exhaust. Carbon monoxide cannot be seen or smelled. Official gas appliance guidance warns against placing non-room-sealed instant gas heaters in bathrooms or poorly ventilated rooms. Follow the model's manual and local requirements, and use a qualified gas installer to assess placement, flue and ventilation. Never treat a safety cut-off feature as permission for an unsafe location.
An electric heater needs the correct circuit and effective earthing, with protection specified for its rated load and the installation environment. Have a qualified electrician check these before purchase if you are unsure. For either fuel, keep the manufacturer's instructions, warranty and installer details. If you smell gas, leave the area and contact your gas provider's emergency service from a safe place.
A five-minute shortlist before you buy
- Count the outlets and showers that may run together, then note your usual hot water schedule.
- Ask an installer to check gas and water pressure, ventilation or flue options, and electrical circuit capacity.
- Compare exact model specifications. For instant units, ask for flow at a stated temperature rise. For storage units, check tank size and reheat time.
- Compare the product price plus installation and expected running cost, using your own current bills.
- Confirm warranty, after-sales contact, stock and the full written payment schedule.

Frequently asked questions
Is a gas or electric geyser cheaper to run in Pakistan?
It depends on your tariffs, usage, model efficiency and installation. Compare the same hot water demand with your current electricity and gas bills. Include the installed purchase cost, not just the monthly utility bill. A blanket claim that one fuel is always cheaper is unreliable.
Does an instant gas geyser work with low water pressure?
Some models are designed to start at lower pressure, but every heater has a minimum flow or pressure requirement. Check the manufacturer's specification and have an installer assess the flow at the tap where you will use it. Weak flow may prevent ignition or reduce the amount of comfortably hot water.
What does 6 L or 8 L mean on an instant gas geyser?
It often describes a rated flow capacity rather than stored water. The useful flow depends on the temperature rise used in the test. Ask for the manufacturer's litres-per-minute rating at a stated temperature rise, and size the unit for the outlets you expect to run together.
Will an electric geyser work during a power cut?
It cannot heat new water without electricity. A storage tank may still contain hot water for a while, depending on how much is left and its insulation. Check with an electrician before assuming your inverter, UPS or solar backup can run the heater's rated load.
Is a dual-fuel electric and gas geyser better than a single-fuel model?
It can help where interruptions to one supply are common, provided both modes are correctly installed. It may cost more to buy and install. Compare the exact model's switching behavior, capacity, safety requirements and total cost against your normal use before paying for flexibility you may not need.
Can a NasGas gas geyser be installed inside a bathroom?
Do not decide this from the brand name or a product listing. Suitability depends on the specific model, its flue design, ventilation and local installation rules. Ask a qualified gas installer to follow the manufacturer's instructions. A non-room-sealed instant gas heater should not be placed in a poorly ventilated bathroom.
